Post edited compiling all the info writen in this thead:
I don't know if someone will be interested, but while I was archiving my old Iberian archaeology notes, I've realized the similarities between the Iberian script and the symbols the band uses. NORTHERN IBERIAN ALPHABET Inscription from Luzaga (Spain) : Celtic language written in Iberian alphabet. Inscriptions (Spain) : Iberian language/Iberian alphabet. Graffiti on Iberian ceramic (Liria, Spain) (IMG:http://img523.imageshack.us/img523/1167/othersymbols5hu.jpg) The 4 signs printed in cd booklets (both, 1st. and 2nd. albums) are included in the Iberian alphabet (the 2nd one is a variant, the sign can be opened or closed). [See the explanation here] (IMG:http://img244.imageshack.us/img244/7074/alfabetoiberico8qoyj8.jpg) All the ancient writing systems receive influences from others, Well, in a simple way, this may be the evolving sequence: 1) Phoenician -> Greek -> Etruscan -> Latin 2) Phoenician-Punic -> Iberian -> Norse Runes* [* This is one of the theories (others say that the norse runes are based on Etruscan, Latin, Greek, ...). But the fact is that more than half of the signs from the Norse Runes have a close resembling to Iberian alphabet, including the Arrow and the X. So, surely Runic writing (used before in southern Europe) was carried to north by Germanic tribes during the Germanic Migration Period]. I've posted the Iberian alphabet, because it's in the Northern Iberian Script in the only one in wich these 4 symbols appear together. I suppose that the band has "adopted" the symbols (as they did with the Phoenix) and has reinterpreted them by giving a special meaning for the band, but the fact is that these 4 symbols belong to ancient writing systems and they are thousands of years of antiquity, and the Norse Runes, astrological symbols, alchemic symbols, etc... used in medieval and modern times are based in those letters from the Mediterranean alphabets (something we can call 'Panmediterranean') and also we can find many of those signs dating from Neolithic, carved in pottery and petroglyphs in megaliths from the Iberian Peninsula, Danube, in Sahara, Egypt, Sumeria, Indus Valley, etc) ---> [more here]. To clarify: the only thing that I explain in this thread is that the 4 symbols printed in cd booklet are ancient symbols, NOT what they mean in last instance for the band and why they use them (thing that obviously I don't know. >>>> but >>>> as acording to Occam's Razor principle 'the simplest answer is usually the correct answer' and those symbols are in the last page of both CD-Booklets ... maybe this is the result of their cryptic sense of humor and they represent what they look like and not what they mean originally: E N D E (not my idea, but I don't remember who said it). *lol* (IMG:http://img510.imageshack.us/img510/6364/iberian2hv4.th.jpg) (IMG:http://img237.imageshack.us/img237/8804/alfabetopiobeltranns7.th.jpg) (IMG:http://img180.imageshack.us/img180/936/alphabetsyh8.th.jpg) (IMG:http://img168.imageshack.us/img168/6551/ibericomf8.th.jpg) (IMG:http://img510.imageshack.us/img510/960/letraswd6.th.jpg) ---- Other info: Phoenix / Mythra ---- Iberian Alphabet and Amerindians: 01, 02, 03, 04 ---- 4/4 sets of glyphics vs. electric symbols ---- Links: http://www.troublebunchmusic.com/30stm.html http://www.marsdust.com/30stm.htm http://www.prickmag.net/30secondstomarsfeature.html http://www.shoutweb.com/interviews/30secondstomars0502.phtml |

The example of inscription that I have put is from Luzaga (Spain): its Celtic language written in Iberian alphabet. I have preordered both cds now, so I don't have the booklets (I only have a copy of the S/T (IMG:http://thirtysecondstomars.forumsunlimited.com/style_emoticons/default/ph34r.gif) , because it was impossible to find it stores in Spain when the album was released in 2002 and back then I didn't buy online). |

I've always wondered what those meant. |

The 4 signs of the 1st album (IMG:http://img385.imageshack.us/img385/5417/othersymbols9va.jpg) are in the iberian alphabet. The 2nd one is a variant, but it is the same symbol (the sign can be opened or closed).

The above link takes you to a sign that explains how the glyphs represent 30 Seconds to Mars. I'm not sure how official it is, but the explinations make sense. EDIT: When it says an inverted roman numeral, they mean the white space. II - If you drew that out, then redrew the white space around it all, it would come out like the glyph. |

Phoenix:
Mythology: The Phoenix is a fabulous and sacred bird, it had the appearance of an eagle, both in shape and size. In the Egyptian mythology, the bird Phoenix was representing the Sun, which dies in the night and is reborn in the morning. This bird was venerated in Heliopolis (Egypt) and considered as an incarnation of RA. It was a bird with a beautiful voice and feathers of gold and red. The bird lived for 500 years. When a phoenix reached the end of its life, it would build a nest of herbs and twigs, light it and throw itself into the flames. A new phoenix would be born from the ashes. The phoenix was associated with life, rebirth and immortality. The bird appeared on ancient Egyptian and Roman coins. The meaning of the phoenix for the different cultures: This animal symbolizes for the different cultures practically the same thing; the immortality and the resurrection: -A Jewish tradition affirms that the chol was only one in Eden that resisted the temptation and preserve the eternal life. -The Egyptians modified this tradition a bit and gave to this bird the name of Benu. -The Greeks gave this myth the name of "phoinix" (red) or "phoenicoperus" (red wings). -During the Roman domination, the Christian primitive tradition influenced by the Hellenic worships, adopted the Phoenix as symbol of immortality and resurrection. -This myth seems to have relation with the bird of fire of the Indian-American mythology. -Another symbolism that it gives to the phoenix is the hope, since it represents the hope that it must never die in man's heart. In Astronomy: Phoenix is one of the Southern Hemisphere constellations. The constellation is in fact rather like a large bird, rising into the air. The constellation has been known as "The Boat" by the Arabs. It's a small constellation of approximately 450 squares placed in the south hemisphere that it crosses the parallel austral 50, which implies that it is observable in the southern hemisphere from the months of july to january culminating in the zenith; on the other hand, in the northern hemisphere it is visible only during October and November culminating to few degrees over the horizon. *post edited* |
